How to read these rankings

Each list ranks names by the number of babies registered with that name in a single place, gender and year. Rank 1 is the most-registered name of that year. Because the lists come from registrations rather than a sample, a name only appears once enough births share the exact spelling, which is why closely related forms of the same name sit far apart.

What each list page shows

Alongside the ranked names, every list is set against its closest comparison for the same year — a country against the other country, a province against the country it sits in. You see which names both put in the same place, which ones they disagree on hardest, and where each name sits on the other list. Each page also shows what climbed and fell since the year before.
